Emory Douglas inspired accordion Book, created in 2021.

Below is an accordion book featuring the work of graphic artist Emory Douglas. The Book has a cover and back page, with each interior page featuring his illustrations as well as my original illustrations.

Emory Douglas was hired by the co-founders of The Black Panther Party to improve the look of their newspaper which is exactly what he did. He completely redesigned the newspaper by switching it to a web press. This allowed for colored printing and graphics. Here, Douglas developed iconic images that The Black Panthers used for their newspapers and promotions coining their brand. Douglas’ style includes bright colors and a mix of photos and illustrations, this is represented in my accordion book design. From his images, I used adobe illustrator and create my own drawings inspired by his aesthetic. The finished product of this accordion book was printed and then bound by hand.
